ScreenFolio reads, indexes and searches your screenshots on your Mac. There are no accounts. A screenshot leaves your Mac only when you ask ScreenFolio to find where it came from on the web, and even then our servers pass it along without keeping it.
1. What stays on your Mac
Your screenshots, the text ScreenFolio recognizes in them, its search index, your searches, and your settings are stored only on your Mac. They are not uploaded to us or to anyone else to make search work. Results of any web search you run (section 3) are saved on your Mac too. When you screenshot a web page into a folder you’ve added, the page’s title and address are saved on your Mac too, with sign-in details and query settings removed, so you can search by them.
2. What leaves your Mac
A few things connect to the internet. None of these includes your screenshots, their text, your searches, or your file names, except what you write yourself in a support report.
- Crash reports. If ScreenFolio crashes or stops responding, it sends a technical report to Sentry: the app and macOS versions, your Mac’s model, and where in the code the problem happened. It also sends anonymous session and performance data so we can see how stable a release is.
- Search models. During setup, ScreenFolio downloads the models it uses for search from Hugging Face. As with any download, Hugging Face sees your IP address.
- Update checks. ScreenFolio checks for new versions by requesting an update list hosted on Cloudflare. The request includes the app’s version.
- Support reports, if you send one. Contact Support sends your message, the reply address you give (if any), the app and macOS versions, and a random ID for your copy of the app to our inbox through our support service on Val Town and the email service Resend. If you include the error log, it contains only errors from the last 7 days, with personal details removed. To stop repeated sending, the service counts reports per app ID and deletes the counts after 30 days.
- Claude and Codex, if you connect them. When you approve a connection, the assistant can search and open your screenshots and read their text. What it receives is then handled under that assistant’s own privacy policy.
3. Finding where a screenshot came from
The Source panel can search the web for the post or page a screenshot shows. Nothing is sent until you press Search the Web or Search Images, and the first time, ScreenFolio asks you to confirm.
- What’s sent. A re-encoded copy of that one screenshot, with no file name, file details or library ID. Everything visible in it is included, so avoid searching screenshots that show private details.
- Where it goes. Through ScreenFolio’s search service, which runs on Cloudflare and Val Town, to OpenAI, which reads the screenshot. For image searches, Google Cloud Vision may receive the screenshot. Exa, Perplexity and X receive search words taken from it. Websites that might be the source receive ordinary page requests.
- What we keep. Our service does not store or log your screenshot, its text, or the results. To enforce search limits, it keeps a random ID for your copy of the app, the time of each search, and counts, and deletes them after 30 days.
- What the providers keep. Each provider handles requests under its own privacy policy. OpenAI may keep API requests for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse.
- Opening a found page. Pages open in a private browsing view inside ScreenFolio that keeps no cookies or history, or in your own browser if you choose.
4. Third-party services
ScreenFolio uses Sentry for crash reports, Hugging Face for model downloads, Cloudflare to host updates, and Val Town and Resend to deliver support reports you send. The web search in section 3 uses Cloudflare, Val Town, OpenAI, Google Cloud Vision, Exa, Perplexity and X, only when you run one. ScreenFolio does not use advertising platforms or analytics that track you across apps or websites.
This website, screenfolio.app, is hosted on Cloudflare and counts page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It uses no cookies and builds no profile of you; it records things like which page was viewed, the referring site and your country, in aggregate.
When you download ScreenFolio from the site, we count the download by day, app version and country. We don’t record your IP address or anything else that identifies you.
5. No selling or sharing
We do not sell, share, or disclose data to anyone. The only information we hold is the crash and stability data and any support reports you send (section 2), and the search counts in section 3.
6. Keeping and deleting data
To delete everything ScreenFolio stores on your Mac, including saved web search results, choose Settings › Diagnostics › Delete All Data, or delete the app. Your screenshot files and Photos library are not changed. Sentry keeps crash reports for [RETENTION PERIOD]. Search counts are deleted after 30 days.
7. Children
ScreenFolio is appropriate for all ages and does not knowingly collect data from children.
